FAQ

Common Questions About Deckle Plus Use Cases

Wondering if Deckle Plus fits your specific operation, grade, or production scale?

1What types of paper mills and converting operations can use Deckle Plus?

Deckle Plus is designed for any converting operation that cuts wide-reel paper or board to narrower finished widths: Kraft paper mills, Duplex board plants, Cylinder Mould board mills, coated and newsprint producers, BOPP and masking tape manufacturers, self-adhesive label printers, flexible packaging converters, corrugated board producers, and tissue and nonwoven converters. The platform scales from 5 t/day small converters to 500+ t/day integrated mill groups.

2Is Deckle Plus suitable for small paper mills and converters under 20 tonnes per day?

Yes. The Starter plan is specifically designed for small converting operations, supporting a single machine with planner and operator accounts. Small mills benefit immediately from replacing manual whiteboard planning. Deckle Plus eliminates 1-2 hours of manual calculation per shift and delivers consistently optimized patterns, even for a single machine with one operator. Go-live takes 48 hours and requires no IT team.

3Can Deckle Plus handle REEL, SHEET, and THERMAL orders on the same machine?

Yes. All three order types coexist in the same pending order queue in Deckle Plus. REEL orders are optimized by width. SHEET orders add a length dimension: the optimizer calculates pass count and cut-out waste between sheets automatically. THERMAL orders include core inner diameter and OD specification fields per roll. The planner selects which orders to include in each production run, and the optimizer applies the correct calculation logic for each type.

4Does Deckle Plus work for corrugated board and flexible packaging converters?

Yes. Corrugated board plants configure their corrugator's deckle width and flute-specific blade count constraints, and manage liner and medium inventory separately. Flexible packaging converters configure laminate structures as paper types and track yield per structure per run. The optimization engine is grade-agnostic and works with whatever deckle width, blade count, and waste targets are configured for the machine.

5How does Deckle Plus compare to running optimization manually in Excel?

Excel can store data and do arithmetic, but it cannot solve the cutting stock problem, the combinatorial optimization at the heart of deckle planning. A human planner evaluating combinations manually considers 10-20 options in an hour. Deckle Plus evaluates all valid combinations simultaneously in under one second and selects the provably optimal or near-optimal solution. The difference in trim waste (typically 2.5% manual versus 0.4% optimized) represents $20,000-$40,000 per month in raw material savings for a 50 t/day mill.
