Logging Waste Events

When to Log

Waste events should be logged whenever actual trim differs significantly from the planned trim. Common triggers: a reel splice that produces an unusable section, a blade that wanders out of tolerance, or an order quantity adjustment that produces excess paper.

Waste Types

• Trim Waste: normal trim produced by cutting patterns (planned, tracked automatically)
• Reel Splice Waste: paper lost at each reel join (log as a splice waste event)
• Defect Waste: off-spec paper removed from the run (log with defect reason code)
• Setup Waste: paper consumed during blade setup before a stable cut is achieved

Per-blade Logging

Each waste event is linked to a specific pattern and blade position. This granularity allows management reports to identify which patterns or blades consistently produce excess waste, useful for machine calibration and scheduling decisions.

Variance Tracking

The run summary shows planned vs. actual waste side-by-side. A positive variance (actual > planned) flags the run for review. The variance report, accessible from Analytics, shows variance trends over time across all runs and machines.
